Seminole County Public School Dividends

LWVSC | Published on 9/25/2023

Seminole County Public Schools is one of the main reasons people move to Seminole County.

Our Dividend volunteerprogram is 50 years old this year, (founded to divide the work)and one of the programs that makes our schools great.  There is a place for each and everyone to help our students grow to be great adults.  It is run by Misa Mills, Community Involvement manager.

Step one is signing up as a Dividend.  https://www.scps.k12.fl.us/cms/One.aspx?portalId=1854109&pageId=2057790

Step two is finding your joy in serving.

There is teacher assistance in the classroom, regularly scheduled times in a specific class, following teacher direction, media help with reshelving or checking out books, at home help might include cutting out items, tearing out worksheets, collating papers, translating materials….

There are programs with training provided by the district:

Healthy Hands ( one or two days twice a year to teach healthy hand washing to elementary student),  Growing Gardens (helping with school gardens to encourage access to fresh vegetables, butterfly gardens, container gardens and hydroponics),

RAP- Reading Acceleration Program (30 minutes of scripted one-on-one reading instruction and reading practice for a student below expected level- once a week),

Connections (one-on-one mentoring during lunch time once a week for positive support- students from K-12).

Other opportunities are:

Living On My Own (randomly scheduled one day events to help middle and high school students learn about family budgeting through a scenario and 10 purchasing opportunities- the scripts are easy to facilitate.  The sessions are 90 minutes and you can do one session or more).

Teach In (November 14 this year is a day full of community teaching about yourself- your hobbies, travels, culture or more usually in one class for one or more periods)

Finding Your Voice- Girls Summit (March 1 for 300 5th and 6thgrade girls struggling to make great choices to help lift them up and teach new strategies while surrounding with strong female role models).

If any of this makes you smile, think about volunteering.  Misa Mills or her program assistant, Katie Burris can help you find your joy in Dividends, or chat with me.  One time-one hour, or every day all day- there is a place for you.
