October 2022 Newsletter
President's Message

This issue of our newsletter is being sent early in preparation for the impacts of Hurricane Ian. I hope everyone has their emergency plans in place, and that we all do well managing the impacts of the storm.

Our Zoom Amendments presentation had been rescheduled for Wednesday, October 5th at 6:00 pm.

Stay safe! For additional information on hurricane preparedness and aftermath check this link to the  Seminole County information center

Candidate Forums

All four candidates for the two seats on the Seminole County School Board will take questions on the League’s Zoom Forum scheduled for Sunday evening, October 16, at 6:30 pm.  Co-sponsoring, as it has for more than 20 years, is the Seminole County Council of PTAs.

Anticipating a large audience with many questions, we are asking the public to submit questions in advance to lwvSeminole@lwvSeminole.org.

The pre-primary SCSB candidates forum attracted more than 2,000 hits on Facebook, as well as nearly 200 during the actual broadcast.  Go to League’s website, lwvseminole.org,  to register.

Because League rules forbid “empty chair” forums, as well as the use of substitutes for the candidate in the forums and debates it sponsors, it has been impossible to schedule a forum for the two contested  Board of County Commission seats this year.

Amendment Presentations

There are three amendments to the Florida State Constitution on the ballot this year. Our Zoom presentation in now scheduled for Wednesday, October 5 at 6:00 pm. Sign up on our webpage, lwvseminole.org.

3,000 postcards!

That’s how many postcards Seminole Leaguers personalized and addressed to Florida’s returning citizens this election season. The card asks, “Not sure? TELL THEM: DO NOT GIVE UP!” giving an emergency phone number (407.710.5496) and email address (canivote@lwvfl.org).  The need for this vital information was made apparent after the arrest of twenty returning citizens for alleged illegal voting.

Queen of the postcard effort is Lee Patrizzi, who did 1,000 cards while “watching TV after dinner.” The League also partnered with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Choosing to take either 50 or 100 packets were Stephen Bacallao, Alice Bamberger, Joan Bradley, Amy Cantley, Rosalie Closson, Peggy Donovan, LaVonne Grayson, Nancy Groves, Kathy Holland, Adrienne Katz, Zelda Ladaan, Sharon Lynn, Liz Merrill, Connie Munroe, Meghan Roth, Nancy Sapp, Charlene Thompson, Jeannine Walsh, and Geri Wright.

The entire effort kicked off with Seminole League’s first in-person Hot Topics since Covid struck. The party produced 542 cards, written by Karen Borglum, David Bottomley, Penelope Canan, Polly DeLucia, Lynn Fenster, Christine Flood, LaVonne Grayson, Philana Haumiller, Carole Hinshaw, Janice Hurley, Taru Joshi, Jane Lane, Sharon Lynn, Gail McQueen, Ed Meason, Elizabeth Murphrey, and Laura Proctor.

Partners In Democracy Precinct Volunteers

As "Partners In Democracy'', the Seminole League, for many years, has adopted a precinct during the Primary and the General elections.   A special thank you to our League precinct volunteers for their dedication and hard work: Deana Schott, Judith Pizzo, Susan Kellicut, Julie Carrington, Bridget Elliott, and Valerie Shultz.

New Volunteer Opportunities

Find Your Niche!

If you are looking for ways to get involved with League work, please contact our President or Membership Chair so we can connect you where you can best help. We respect that many of our members are still working, have leadership roles in other organizations, have family responsibilities and commitments, or travel extensively. Locally, we have short-term opportunities in addition to longer-term options. We also have opportunities to collaborate with others in the community or at the state level.

We need volunteers with these specific interests and skills: Greeters at our events, Computer skills, Audio Visual skills, Social Media skills, and Artistic skills to help create flyers.

In addition, we are looking for people willing to serve on a Hospitality Committee to coordiante special events, such as our Holiday Party. We are always looking for people who might want to learn from current committee chairs, so they can eventually become committee chairs themselves.

We are more than happy to connect you to work that allows you to use your time, talent, and energy in ways that contribute to the greater work of the League and benefits our communities.

New Committees Forming

We have enough interest to kick off one to three new Action Committees, if we have people willing to chair or co-chair a committee. The committees we are looking at kicking off in the next few months are Justice/Juvenile Justice, LGBTQIA, and Health Care.

Justice/Juvenile Justice Action Committee

The Justice/Juvenile Justice Action Committee will hold its kick-off meeting on Zoom in October on a date TBD. If interested, please email lwvseminole@gmail.com. Once we have the date and time, we will advise all who are interested. At this first meeting, we will discuss the LWVSC and state positions, and how we might want to take action this fiscal year.

LGBTQIA and Health Care Committees

If anyone is willing to consider chairing or co-chairing the LGBTQIA or the Health Care committees, please email the above address, and we will contact you. Without a chair, we cannot kick off either committee.

LWVSC Name Badges

Would you like to have a name badge for when you attend LWV events? Or would you like to have one with the new LWV logo on it? If you are a board member, you can request the badge with your position on it, such as Voter Registration Chair or Secretary. Otherwise, it will have your name along with the current LWV logo on it. The cost for a badge is $10.00.

If you are interested, please let Lynn Fenster know by emailing her at lfenster.lwv@gmail.com or telling her at an upcoming Hot Topics.
