President's Message
power the south 10 2023

A few weeks ago, Valerie Schulz and I were able to attend an LWVUS program entitled Power the South that was held in Orlando. (See link below for the slides from the presentations)

It focused on relationship organizing – that to our friends and family we are trusted messengers. We can bring true and accurate information about voting and elections to our communities and empower them to act. This is how to create a people power movement which is the foundation of democracy. When people are active in their communities and informed about the issues, they then show up and express themselves through the power of their vote.

We are about to enter the November 2024 election cycle. Here are the dates for 2024:

  • Presidential Preference Primary Election: March 19
  • Primary Election: August 20
  • General Election: November 5

Now is the time to get prepared. Know the facts. Share your information with friends and families. Invite them to join us at the League in the work of empowering voters and defending democracy. There is no other more patriotic work than that.

Valerie Schulz addressed the delegation on behalf of Floridians for National Popular Vote. Robin Dehlinger addressed the delegation as a concerned constituent regarding issues in education. Cathy Swerdlow officially represented the League speaking to our legislative priorities, particularly regarding voting rights and gun violence prevention. Also in attendance were: Deb Carswell,  Anna-Marie Cote, Donna Gray, Leslie Grubl and Katie Murphy.

Update from our Tour of the Health Department!
Health dept tour

Thank you for bringing awareness to the need for clothes for sexual assault victims seen at the Victim Service Center (VSC) here. Your question was the impetus to expand our collaboration with the VSC! I got in touch with folks at their main office in Orlando to learn more about the items that would be helpful. We are now receiving donations of new clothes, blankets, slippers, snacks, beverages (water, soda, ginger ale). We will regularly take the items to VSC offices. Please feel free to share the call for donations with the League! (Information about how we will do this will be coming!)

Also, during our visit we heard about two of the maternal-child health projects the Department was working on. They have now been launched...

Delivering a Doula Difference, facilitates training for women who want to serve as doulas in Orange, Osceola, Lake and/or Seminole counties.

Cradle Seminole: Every Baby, Every Daya nurse home visiting program, will provide care for pregnant moms and their babies based on qualifying criteria such as moms’ young age or multiple small children in the home

Julia Horensten, Heather Haskett, and Claudia Tejada were our guides for the tour.
