The League of Women Voters has been an active champion of openness in government throughout its history. The organization’s principles include the requisite that “government bodies protect the citizen’s right to know by giving adequate notice of proposed actions, holding open meetings and making public records accessible.”

Local Government Policies
- We believe the government closest to the people (county and municipal) should make decisions affecting its residents and we oppose efforts by federal and state legislatures to preempt that authority.
- We review changes in ethics laws and monitor compliance with the Sunshine Laws.
- We maintain a yardstick, adopted in 1989, for measuring charter government.
- We study the Seminole County Charter and support amendments that align with the positions of the League of Women Voters of the United States, the League of Women Voters of Florida, and the League of Women Voters of Seminole County.
Goals
The current goals of the Committee are:
- To educate the Seminole County League of Women Voters and the residents of Seminole County about the structure and function of local government.
- To monitor and, when necessary, act on legislation that preempts the home rule authority of city and county government
- To revitalize the Seminole County League of Women Voters Observer Corps
- To use the Yardstick for Local Government to evaluate decision-making in Seminole County.
Meetings
In March, our Local Government Committee asked the Seminole County Manager and the Clerks of the seven cities about current or pending vacancies on their advisory boards. Several have current or upcoming vacancies for residents. Go to their websites to learn more or contact Fraser Howe.
